Deep River was first mentioned in 1876, when it was published in an anthology of spiritual songs by J.B.T. Marsh. The first recorded version is by contralto Marian Anderson, in 1921. It is possibly one of the best known spirituals and has been arranged multiple times for theater, musical, film and a wide variety of musical formats. I love the essential version of Hank Jones & Charlie Haden, from their 2012 Come Sunday album. As a child, I was lucky to see Hank Jones live at the Teatro Principal (in my hometown, Compostela). We were just 10 people in the audience! I will never forget his elegant touch. Here is a small tribute to him and the also unforgettable Haden.
