This piece, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, was written for the 1944 film Cover Girl, starring Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly. The singer who dubs Hayworth at the scene of the movie is Martha Mears. The song was immediately popularized with versions of Dick Haymes, Helen Forrest, Bing Crosby or Jo Stafford.

Long Ago and Far Away by Jerome Kern

Despite not being one of the most played Jazz standards, there are very prominent versions by greatests of Jazz such as Chet Baker, Oscar Peterson or more recently Brad Meldhau with Charlie Haden.

The drastic modulation, without warning, in the second melodic phrase is perhaps the most striking aspect of the piece. It goes saucily and without warning to another key.

In my version of Long Ago and Far Away I take advantage of the wonderful rearrangement of Russ Freeman and Chet Baker -precisely in this rise to the new key- and I follow that stylistic pattern, adding several chords throughout the exposition of the theme, in a little tribute to the great Bill Evans.
