On Sunday, July 19, the Jazz VG Club, the cycle presented by the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival after canceling its 44th edition, hosted a piano concert by Abe Rábade. The recital offered a great variety of atmospheres: stride, bebop, hardop, American song, Brazilian song, Argentine song, and traditional Galician music.
In the words of Yahvé de la Cavada, journalist in the Spanish newspaper El País, “Rábade, on solo piano, presented part of the music in which he has been immersed during the months of confinement. With a concert structured in three blocks, he drew an intimate self-portrait where he contextualized each piece of the repertoire from a personal perspective, passing naturally from standards such as When I Fall In Love, Joy Spring or Long Ago And Far Away, to original compositions, such as Epílogo or the unpublished Freixo, or precious readings of classics such as Dos Gardenias, by Isolina Carrillo, Alfonsina y el mar, by Ariel Ramírez, or Retrato Em Branco E Preto, by Antonio Carlos Jobim, all performed with swing, introspection and intensity, as required by each piece”.
This was the playlist of the concert:
- Long Ago and Far Away (Jerome Kern)
- Joy Spring (Clifford Brown)
- Dos Gardenias (Isolina Carrillo)
- Cyclic Episode (Sam Rivers)
- When I Fall in Love (Cole Porter)
- Freixo (Abe Rábade) / based in a tratitional Galician Maneo
- Retrato em Branco e Preto (António Carlos Jobim)
- Epílogo (Abe Rábade)
- Alfonsina y el Mar (Félix Ramírez)
- Medley (Homenaxe a Bud Powell) with these pieces:
– Celia & Crazeology (Bud Powell)
– Broken Chart (Abe Rábade)
The Basque newspaper El Correo published an interview, in which Ramón Albertus and Abe discussed about the good health of jazz in Galiza and the harmonizations Abe has made of speeches that have marked history within international activism, such as Angela Davis’s or, more recently, the one by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Basque public television dedicated a section of its news to the Jazz VG Club where you can see a few moments of the concert.
